Richard Sloan was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1935. At the age of 15, he studied at the American Academy of Art in Chicago as its youngest full-time student. He then worked as a staff wildlife illustrator at the Lincoln Park Zoo. His 1965 solo exhibition “The Birds of Falconry” at Chicago’s Abercrombie and Fitch Gallery was a sellout success, after which Richard left Lincoln Park and began a career as a full-time wildlife artist. He traveled extensively, capturing the wildlife of the world’s rainforests in his art, and was often called the “Dean of Rainforest Painters.”
Richard’s paintings have been featured in National Wildlife Magazine, exhibited at the American Museum of Natural History, the Carnegie Museum, The Royal Scottish Academy, The National Geographic Society, The British Museum of Natural History and numerous other museums and galleries. He was a longtime member of the Society of Animal Artists, listed in “Who’s Who in American Art”, “Artists of Renown”, and “The Dictionary of International Biography.”
In the Spring of 1998, The University Of Arizona Press published the book “The Raptors Of Arizona“, a 220 page volume on the birds of prey of the Southwest, featuring 42 Sloan paintings. In recognition of this work, Richard was inducted into The Arizona Outdoor Hall Of Fame in 2003. The handsigned limited edition prints available for sale here are Richard’s paintings from this book.
Richard passed away in 2007 in Palm City, Florida, and his life and work are celebrated in his art.
