Title: Prairie Falcon
Prairie Falcons are large falcons with pointed wings and medium-long tails. These falcons are brown above and pale with brown markings on the breast and belly. From below, they show dark under the wing from the “armpit” to the wrist. They have a pale stripe above the eye and a brown mustache stripe. Prairie Falcons often hunt from low altitudes, flapping powerfully across open areas and surprising prey by hugging the ground contours to stay out of view. Their prey includes small birds and mammals such as ground squirrels and jackrabbits, and also lizards and insects. They occur in wide-open habitats of the West, including sagebrush, desert, prairie, agricultural fields, and alpine meadows up to about 11,000 feet elevation. They nest on ledges on sheer rocky cliffs.
Richard Sloan, who passed away in 2007, was a world-renowned wildlife illustrator specializing in raptors whose paintings have been featured in several nature publications and exhibited at numerous museums, galleries, and private collections. In the Spring of 1998, The University of Arizona Press published the book “The Raptors of Arizona“, a 220 page volume on the birds of prey of the Southwest, featuring 42 Sloan paintings. The hand signed limited edition print available for sale here is an authorized reproduction of Richard Sloan’s original paintings also featured in the book.
